Photography Makes It Real
Photography is invaluable in realm of technical communication, helping to get the message across to the intended audiences. " A picture is worth a thousand words", an expression everyone has heard countless times. All have experienced this truth witnessing the kind of images commercial advertising uses for education, fashion, magazines sports, etc. The advent of the Web heralded the extensive use of photography in the design of all types of websites easily accessed by readers using search engines like Google and search directories like Yahoo and MSN. Ever since technical documents were first created they almost certainly had some sort of images in them to help readers visualize what was being expressed. At the beginning, these images were basically line art illustrations and this continued for centuries however, when photography was discovered it revolutionized everything. The last century was recorded mostly by photography using the 35mm film cameras made by famous companies like
Canon
,
Kodak
, Zeiss Ikon,
Lieca
,
Minolta
,
Nikon
, and others. Rapid advances in film and color film emulsions from companies such as
Afga
,
Kodak
, Konica, and
Fujifilm
, and the evolvement of sophisticated cameras helped photographers to capture the moment in the often extraordinary and dramatic events that were the 20th century. Since the Kodak film company came out with their very expensive model DCS100 digital camera shortly after
Sony
had introduced the first digital camera to the world, the average person has been allowed into what used to be just the realm of professional photographers and their film developing shops. Now the amateur can take images, using his affordable digital camera, and immediately manipulate them creating what seemed impossible before . Not only is this possible, now it also doesn't cost an arm and a leg like in the past and it can be done quickly. Another fantastic ability digital cameras can do is record short videos of events or scenes. In fact, the latest use of this ability now has even been incorporated into the cell phone everyone seems to have, called camera phones. History was recorded recently when a witness used one of these during the London, England terrorist attack on their subway system, helping authorities in their investigations. Although use of digital cameras has become common so much so that now it is hard to find quality high- end film cameras and film because industry has decided to switch to digital, film cameras still are being used . Recent surveys in the USA show that a majority, nearly 70%, of professional photographers still use film preferring it to certain shortcomings endured using digital technology. According to these experts digital cameras still cannot duplicate such things like: - the wide range of exposure that photographic film is capable of
- film's excellent ability to capture more definition information
- film's archival storage ability
- film camera's cycling speed when making multiple sequence of images of an event.
This last item, I believe has probably been already mastered by digital technology by now. As previously mentioned the Internet and computers have made image creation and manipulation very easy for the average person. Because of advances in digital cameras and photo-editing software combining elements of many photos to make unique images is a no-brainer. It is interesting to note that because of this many courts disallow the use of digital images for evidence, although regular film images still help convict the lawbreakers. Today websites like
Flickr
allow the online viewing and sharing of digital images. Here you can find stock images of almost any gendre – family, flowers, sports, technology, travel, weddings, widgets etc. All these photos can be downloaded from this directory to create all sorts of technical documents for personal and business use. Some can be enlarged to poster size while others can be a thumbnail or something in between. Of course certain rules such as copyright and permission from the authors/creators must be followed before any use is allowed particularly if for commercial use. I never tire of viewing the constant and always new content subscribers upload to this site and have contributed some content of my own which can be viewed by typing
phantastikfotos
in your browser's search block. The digital images are not limited to still ones but can also be short video images of almost anything. For anyone making their own videos there are number of sites, the most popular being
YouTube
, that you can visit that offer free downloads of a myriad of interesting topics which you can view and review many times. Today's world without photography and the technology associated and derived from it's invention is very hard to imagine. I mean how could anyone write howto books, create animated advertisements, comment on sporting events, or record a wedding without photography?
