Howard Popliger was born into a very successful family textile business which employed 200 people at it's peak in 1990. Today, he is CEO of Epic Development & Evaluations, a Human Resources company whose mandate is assessing qualified candidates, mostly the hi-tech and IT industries.

His qualifications include:

• Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Accounting and Management
• Training with three top North American companies in the assessment field - Profile International, Objective Management Group, and Appraisal Smart
• Personal work experience in aforementioned family business and years in the assessment field.

Most people have no idea how critical assessment is to clinical psychology because they have little or no involvement in this field. It is the domain of trained professionals.

Assessment for a job basically involves completing a datasheet which is quite thorough. It normally takes about an hour to complete and another 40 minutes to determine whether you are psychologically qualified for the company.

Corporations today want to know what we are all about, our motivations, how we make decisions, and whether our values mesh with theirs.

Assessments are being used to help them alter their organizational parameters and help attain desired specific business goals. They make processing less emotional and confrontational.

Seth Godin, entrepreneur, co-founder of very popular website Squidoo , and well known expert in this field recommends in his best seller "Meatball Sundae" getting a self-assessment before you apply for a job. He states that it is the number one way to finding out about yourself, enabling you to find a career that fits you.

This month's photo is of an early 1920's vintage Rolls Royce convertible sports sedan which attracted many who attended a recent old British car exposition in Hudson, Quebec. This affluent town of 5,088 is just 60 kilometers west of downtown Montreal and has previously hosted these well attended annual shows.

STC China Trip

Society for Technical Communication (STC) is an individual membership organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communication.

STC President Linda Oestreich has invited members to fly with her on a trip to China departing from Los Angeles on October 19, returning October 31. The roundtrip airfare will include visits to 3 cities - Beijing, Guilin, and Shanghai etc. STC members visited China in 1997 and 2002.
